Dive 1: Abu Ramada Plateau
Dive 2: Fandira Foc
Today was no ordinary day: that was clear from the outset. With a large group of experienced divers checking out today, something special was on the menu. And so, we thusly headed for Abu Ramada Plateau. We conducted a drift pick-up. The visibility and marine life put on a full show for the occasion, with an abundance of juvenile fish and a shoal of barracuda making an appearance. After swimming along the deeper part of the drop off, we turned into the cave opening beginning at 30 metres and ascended at a leisurely pace through the vertical section, opening up again at 28 metres. It was absolutely packed full of life, in all colours and sizes. After finishing our stops along the reef wall, we shot our buoys and got back to the boat, where smells of lunch filled the whole vessel.
We moored in a windless, boatless lagoon, and feasted on the delicious lunch prepared by the crew of El Basi. Then we took the next hour to get rid of our Northern European tan lines, whilst enjoying some cold drinks and chit-chat. After such an idyllic morning, one may think that the day could only get worse from there on. On the contrary, however, our second dive made the first look more like the appetizer than the entree. ‘And the entree?’ you ask: Fandira Foc. More specifically; shark caves.
Again conducted as a drift pick-up, we dropped right above the first cave. No sharks. Then we darted to the drop-off. Giant moray eels, spectacular views… but no sharks. We made our way slowly back up the drop-off, drifting with the current, admiring some small critters; some nudibranchs. Yet, the anticipation ran through us all as we approached the final cave. So much so that we swam slower and slower as the cave got nearer and nearer. Cameras at the ready, eyes peeled wide open… Lo and behold: SHARKS! Wait, can it be? TWO SHARKS! Us hovering around the exterior of the cave, peering in with lights and cameras, and with the two white tips staring back at us, we suddenly found ourselves in bit of a Mexican standoff. Though this was short-lived, as one of the sharks decided to put an end to this staring competition, and rather darted out of the cave straight between two divers. After this beautiful encounter we continued our drift along the plateau, until reaching the big block, where we completely our stops, shot our buoys and said a final goodbye to all the bustling reefs for today. And now, it is back to the centre for some well-earned stamps and some very well-earned drinks.
Halbtagesfahrt
Tauchgang 1: Sha’ab Eshta
Nachdem wir alle neuen Gäste eingecheckt haben und Micha mit seinem OWD Schülern vom Hausriff Tauchgang zurück war, haben wir uns alle um 11 Uhr auf dem Boot getroffen und sind zu einer Halbtagesfahrt rausgefahren. Hier haben wir uns entschieden nach Shaab Eshta zu fahren. Flach und bunt, das passt für den ersten Tauchgang im Tauchurlaub und auch für den OWD Kurs.
Nach den Briefings und späterem Bleicheck tauchten wir ab. Die Sicht war nicht die beste, aber trotzdem konnten wir jede Menge Fische entdecken. Es gab Rotmeerbarben, den juvenilen Imperator-Kaiserfisch und über dem Hauptblock sahen wir eine große Makrele. Zudem entdeckten wir Strichel-Seegurke, Fransendrachenkopf, Gebänderte Putzergarnele, Masken-Falterfisch und auf dem Seegras einen Seegras-Geisterpfeifenfisch.

Micha musste mit seinen Schülern den CESA üben und das Kompass navigieren. Sie haben alles geschafft und wir können ihnen zum bestandenen Tauchkurs gratulieren. Nach dem Auftauchen roch es sehr lecker aus der Küche der Albatros. Die Crew hatte in der Zwischenzeit schon ein sehr leckeres Mittagessen zubereitet. Nach dem Essen hatten wir noch etwas Zeit zum Sonne tanken und ein bisschen schnorcheln. Nächster Stop: ScuBar!
